WALKING THE JOURNEY WITH SURVIVORS
As with any type of death, the bereaved vastly differ in the ways grief is expressed. Death by suicide brings additional differences and complications that grief counselors may not always recognize. John R. Jordan, Ph.D, a nationally recognized psychologist specializing in work with survivors of suicide and other losses, presented the differences in themes and social processes that accompany suicide bereavement for FRIENDS WAY facilitators. The presentation emphasized some of the prevalent themes across suicide bereavement, such as heightened guilt, anger, rejection and abandonment by the deceased. The session also explored other common problems faced by survivors and provided FRIENDS WAY facilitators with information regarding recent trends in understanding grief, how suicide makes the mourning process different and general principles to follow when providing bereavement support to suicide survivors. FRIENDS WAY facilitators are trained community volunteers that support group sessions at FRIENDS WAY. Providing facilitators with specialized trainings is essential to meeting the needs of FRIENDS WAY families.
7TH ANNUAL FRIENDS WAY GALA- May 17, 2008
Thanks to our many supporters, FRIENDS WAY raised over $65,000 for children's programming and supplies. The evening, with stars gleaming like the night sky, proved to be an enjoyable night of presentations, dancing and dinner for the almost 300 guests. The lively auctions were the highlight of the evening, bringing in more than $43,000 alone. FRIENDS WAY bracelets sold out and over $5,000 was donated to pay for the food on program evenings. Thanks for a great event. We hope to see you again next year.
Stay tuned for photos from this wonderful evening.
NEW PROGRAM FOR YOUNG ADULTS!
